FAQs
What is our Nurse-to-Patient ratio?
We always keep patient safety as our top priority and so our goal is that your child’s nurse will have two other patients. There are times; however, where the nurse may have one to three other patients.
Can I cook my food here?
There is a toaster over and a microwave that can be used to heat food up. Most families bring dishes already prepared at home, frozen meals, canned meals, or order takeout. At the Chicago facility, you can use the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) 3rd floor kitchen as long as we know ahead of time so that we can place a referral in with RMH.
What if my child needs something and no one is in the room?
If the nurse is in another room, another staff member such as another RN, CNA or clinical coordinator will respond to alarms and patient calls.
How long can my child stay here (both transition and respite)?
Respite is a short stay visit ranging from 48hrs to 14 days per year. For transitional care, the focus is on training you on your child’s care and making sure you have all the right resources set up in your home before you leave, such as private duty nursing. The amount of time this takes directly corelates with how frequently you are here for training. We are licensed for transitional stays up to 120 days.
Can I sleep over?
At AHK Naperville and Chicago, we do not generally have parents spend the night as most rooms are not private. We do ask caregivers to stay for two 24 hour stays once training is completed to carry out care independently, and at that time we arrange for private accommodations as much as possible.
At AHK Peoria, please inquire about spending the night when speaking to the case manager.
Can I call overnight?
Absolutely, our nurses are available to take your call 24/7.
